About Our Mission

turtleproject.org/ exists for one reason: sea turtles need more people rowing in the same direction. All seven of the world’s sea turtle species are threatened or endangered, and the organizations working to change that outcome are often small, under-resourced, and hard to find. We built this site to make them easier to find, easier to understand, and easier to support.

What we do

turtleproject.org/ is a directory and awareness hub, not a conservation organization in our own right. We don't run field programs, and we don't collect donations. Instead, we:

Why the Caribbean and Latin America

Six of the seven sea turtle species nest or forage in the Wider Caribbean, and the region is home to one of the largest conservation coalitions on Earth: WIDECAST, spanning more than 40 nations and territories. Just to the south and west, Latin American countries from Mexico to Brazil host community-led programs that have spent decades turning former egg-poaching villages into conservation strongholds. We think both regions deserve equal billing alongside better-funded, higher-profile programs elsewhere.

A note on objectivity

We aim to represent every region and every kind of organization — from large international nonprofits to single-beach community groups — fairly and proportionately. If you think we’re missing an organization or a research source, let us know.
