Established in 1986 as a Center of Excellence by the University of Florida Board of Regents, the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research honors pioneering researcher Dr. Archie Carr and continues his legacy of long-term sea turtle science.
What they study
The center conducts multi-decade research into sea turtle migration, growth rates, survival, and reproductive behavior — using satellite telemetry, tagging programs, and genetic analysis. It maintains the CMTTP (Cooperative Marine Turtle Tagging Program), the CTURTLE database, and an extensive online bibliography.
Because sea turtles grow slowly and live for decades, the center emphasizes that meaningful studies must “stretch over decades” — and it invites public participation through its tag-reporting system, a genuine citizen-science contribution.
